To become an AI engineer in India, get strong at Python and SQL, learn to build with large language models and AI agents, ship two or three projects that run end to end, and send a resume written in each job's own words. That path is not a guess: in October 2026, Rezifi counted 51 open AI engineer jobs in India, and 71% of them listed Python as required.

Below: the skills those jobs require, the experience they expect, and what to build so your resume can prove it. Every India count comes from Rezifi's AI engineer skills page. When you are ready to apply, Rezifi lists AI engineering jobs in India by kind, each job confirmed open in the last 3 days.

What do AI engineer jobs in India ask for?

A skill is counted once per job, and only when the posting's own words name it. Python is the clear base: it is the skill these jobs are built around most often and the one they require most. After it come SQL, then AI agents and large language models, and the tools that put a model into production.

Rezifi's AI engineer skills page: 51 open AI engineer jobs in India from 25 employers whose careers sites Rezifi reads, counted on 17 October 2026. Not every job in the country.

The nice to haves say where the role is heading. The ones named most are AI Agents, Retrieval-Augmented Generation, Amazon Web Services and Azure. A missing nice to have is not a reason to skip a job; it is a reason to say clearly what you do have.

What does the wider market ask for?

Much the same. Rezifi's October 2026 jobs report counted 35,419 open jobs from 386 employers on 17 October 2026, at the employers whose careers sites Rezifi reads, many of them technology companies; not every job in a country. 1,483 of them were machine learning and AI engineering jobs, and those asked most for Python (64%), Machine learning (27%), Large Language Models (24%) and Artificial Intelligence (23%). 53% of them were senior or lead roles.

Which skills should you learn first?

Take them in this order; each step is a skill these postings name.

  1. Python and SQL. Write clean, tested Python, and pull and shape your own data in SQL.
  2. One deep learning framework. PyTorch and TensorFlow are both on the required list. Learn one well; the ideas carry over.
  3. Large language models, RAG and AI agents. AI Agents is required in 22% and Large Language Models in 18%. Build an app that answers from your own documents, then one that calls tools.
  4. One cloud. Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services and Azure all appear. Pick the one the jobs you want name, and deploy something real on it.
  5. The shipping tools. Docker, CI/CD, REST APIs and Apache Spark are all on the required list. They are what turns a notebook into a service other people can use.

What projects prove it?

A posting asks for skills you have used, and a project is where you show you used them. Three that cover most of the list above:

  • A RAG app over real documents. Retrieve from your own document set, answer questions from it, and measure how often the answers are right. It covers large language models, RAG, Python and an evaluation you can talk about.
  • An agent that does a job. It reads a request, calls two or three tools or APIs, and logs every step. It covers AI agents, REST APIs and failure handling.
  • A model behind an API. Train or fine-tune a model in PyTorch or TensorFlow, serve it behind a REST API in a Docker container, and deploy it on a cloud with CI/CD.

Put each on GitHub with a short readme, and describe it on your resume in the posting's own skill names.

How much experience do AI engineer jobs ask for?

44 of the 51 open AI engineer jobs state a minimum number of years, and among them the median minimum is 5 years. 30 are senior or lead roles, 12 are mid level, and 1 is an internship or entry-level role.

So most jobs titled AI engineer go to people with years of experience. Starting out, there are two honest routes in:

  • Start where freshers are hired. Internships and fresher roles take people with little or no experience. Rezifi lists AI engineer jobs for freshers and AI internships, and how to get an AI job as a fresher in India goes through that route step by step.
  • Move across from a job you already have. Backend, data and full stack developers often use part of the list already. Add LLM and agent work, then apply for AI roles that ask for your years.

How do you write an AI engineer resume that gets read?

When you apply on a careers site, your resume lands in the employer's applicant tracking system (ATS), where a recruiter can search it for the job's skills by name. So write them the way the posting does.

  1. Use the posting's spelling. If it says Large Language Models or Retrieval-Augmented Generation, write that, with the short form beside it: LLMs, RAG. A search finds the words, not the idea.
  2. Put each skill where it is proved. In your skills section, and in the project or job bullet that shows you used it, with what you built and how well it worked.
  3. Check what a machine reads. Rezifi's free ATS check scores your resume out of 100 the way an ATS and a recruiter read it and shows what a machine reads, with no sign-up.
  4. Tailor it to each job. Rezifi's AI resume tailor rewrites your bullets, summary and skills in each job's own keywords, shows every change on its line to keep or dismiss, and never invents an employer, role, date or credential.

Use your own resume from Word or Google Docs and Rezifi keeps its design, no template needed. No resume yet? Build one from Rezifi's ATS-friendly templates, from your notes, your LinkedIn profile or a PDF.

Where do you find AI engineer jobs in India?

The same work goes by several titles, so search by the kind of work you want, not one title. Rezifi keeps a live list for each, every job confirmed open in the last 3 days, with the employer's apply link:

Questions people ask

How do I become an AI engineer in India?

Learn Python and SQL well, then one deep learning framework such as PyTorch, then build with large language models, retrieval-augmented generation and AI agents, and deploy your work on a cloud with Docker and CI/CD. Yes, but usually not straight into a job titled AI engineer: 1 of the 51 open AI engineer jobs Rezifi counted in India in October 2026 was an internship or entry-level role. A fresher's way in is an AI internship or a fresher role in AI, data or software, with two or three projects that use Python, large language models and AI agents.

Is an AI engineer the same as a machine learning engineer?

In job postings the two overlap. Rezifi's count files them under one occupation, and AI engineer, machine learning engineer, applied AI and cloud AI engineer were all titles for it. Read the skills a posting asks for rather than its title: a role built around large language models and AI agents is different work from one built around training models.
