A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works with one customer at a time to get a product running in that customer's real systems: scoping the problem, writing the code and staying until it works in production. In India that product is mostly AI: of the 20 forward deployed engineer jobs open in India on Rezifi's list on 4 November 2026, 17 describe AI work.

Here is what the role is, how it differs from its neighbours, what the postings ask for and how to apply. The jobs themselves are on Rezifi's list of forward deployed engineer jobs in India.

What does a forward deployed engineer do?

Palantir set out the role on its own blog in 2019, in Dev versus Delta. Its software engineers build one part of the platform, and that code ships to many customers. Its forward deployed software engineers sit on a team that supports one customer, deploy and adapt the platform until it solves that customer's problem, and measure success by the customer's goal: “one customer, many capabilities”, against a software engineer's “one capability, many customers”.

It is not consulting, the same post says: a forward deployed engineer does far more engineering than a consultant, and often sends code back into the core product when a customer needs a missing feature.

OpenAI's posting for the role-sf-san-francisco/) reads the same way. Its forward deployed engineers take its models from a first prototype to stable production with its most strategic customers, own every step from scoping to rollout, and still write code when progress depends on it. It asks for five or more years of engineering or deployment experience that includes customer-facing work.

How is it different from a software engineer, a solutions engineer or an AI engineer?

The four titles share skills and differ in who the work is for. The last two follow the postings open in India on Rezifi's list on 4 November 2026.

  • Software engineer: every customer at once. Owns one part of the product and ships it to everyone who uses it.
  • Forward deployed engineer: one customer at a time. Scopes the customer's problem, then builds and deploys the answer in their systems.
  • Solutions engineer: a customer buying or onboarding. In many postings, demos and proofs of concept before a sale, onboarding after it.
  • AI engineer: a product, their own company's or a client's. Builds and deploys AI applications, from LLM apps to agents.

In short, an AI engineer is named for the technology, a forward deployed engineer for where the work happens. They overlap: on 4 November 2026, Databricks listed an “AI Engineer, AI FDE” in Bengaluru.

If the AI side draws you, AI engineer jobs in India are their own list, and Rezifi's AI engineer skills page shows the skills 51 open AI engineer jobs in India asked for, counted on 17 October 2026. Python leads it.

What do forward deployed engineer jobs in India ask for?

The 20 on Rezifi's list on 4 November 2026 all came from employers' own careers sites. Here is what they had in common.

  • Customers. 16 of the 20 describe working directly with customers, clients or partners. Mastercard's lead FDE embeds with clients to build AI prototypes; Adobe's works with its strategic customers in a customer pod.
  • AI. 17 of the 20 describe AI work. Exotel's build voicebots on large language models, Wipro's deploy and manage AI agents, and Handshake's build software for customer deployments for frontier AI labs.
  • Experience. 16 state a minimum, from 2.5 years (Exotel's Forward Deployed Engineer 2) to 12 (Innovaccer's director role), with 5 in the middle.
  • Where. 11 list Bengaluru, the rest Noida, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai, Chennai and Ahmedabad. 5 are remote.
  • Pay. None of the 20 states it.

  • Python9 of 20
  • Large language models9 of 20
  • TypeScript6 of 20
  • AI agents5 of 20
  • REST APIs4 of 20
  • Java3 of 20
  • Go3 of 20
The skills Rezifi's AI picked out of the 20 forward deployed engineer postings open in India on Rezifi's list, read on 4 November 2026. “Large language models” counts any skill naming them, such as LLM APIs.

So a forward deployed engineer in India is a working engineer first, with large language models and agents on top. The customer half shows up in the duties: scoping a problem, building a prototype, deploying it.

Who hires forward deployed engineers in India?

The 18 employers on the list on 4 November 2026 were Databricks, Cisco, Adobe, NVIDIA, Mastercard, Barclays, Accenture, Wipro, Innovaccer, Exotel, Whatfix, Vegapay, Handshake, Outreach, Attentive.ai, Bacancy Technology, Digit88 and Vinove.

The list changes every day: Rezifi's forward deployed engineer jobs in India shows the ones open now, with the employer's own apply link. See also remote AI engineer jobs in India and Rezifi's AI jobs page.

How do you become a forward deployed engineer?

  1. Be a strong builder first. The skills in these postings lead with Python and TypeScript, then APIs and the employer's own platform.
  2. Ship something on large language models. OpenAI's posting asks for people who have built or deployed systems powered by LLMs. Put one you built on your resume, with who used it.
  3. Take customer-facing work when it comes. Palantir lists breaking a customer's high-level problem down to the lines of code that solve it among the skills the role needs. Integrations and client projects build it.
  4. Start where the door is open. None of the 16 postings that state a minimum asks for under 2.5 years, so a fresher's way in is a software or AI engineering role first. How to get an AI job as a fresher in India covers that step.

How to tailor your resume for a forward deployed engineer job

Each posting weighs the engineering and the customer work differently. Exotel's asks for prompt architectures and user acceptance testing; Databricks' asks for Spark on its own platform. One resume cannot speak to both in their own words.

  • Lead with a deployment. Your strongest bullet is something you built and put into real users' hands: what it was, who used it and what changed.
  • Use the posting's words. If it says voicebots, LLM APIs or AI agents, and you have done that work, say it in those words.
  • Show both halves. One bullet of engineering depth, one of working with a customer or a team outside engineering.

Rezifi's AI resume tailor does this for every posting. It rewrites your bullets, summary and skills in each job's own keywords, shows every change on its line to keep or dismiss, and never invents an employer, role, date or credential. It works on a copy, so your original is untouched, and it uses your own Word or Google Docs resume in its own design, no template needed. No resume yet?
