To paste into your resume without breaking its formatting, paste the words only and let your resume supply the look: use Ctrl+Shift+V (Cmd+Shift+V on a Mac), then remove any bullet symbols, line breaks and spaces the text brought with it. A list should become separate bullets, not one long line with breaks inside it.
That is the manual way, and it works. This post shows what goes wrong when you paste from ChatGPT, Google Docs, Word, a PDF or LinkedIn, how to clean each one up by hand, and how the Rezifi resume editor, rebuilt this week, does all of it the moment you paste.

Why pasting breaks a resume
When you copy text, many apps put two versions on the clipboard: the plain words, and a formatted copy with its fonts, sizes, colours and list styling. A normal paste takes the formatted copy. In a resume, where every line is meant to look like its neighbours, that is where the trouble starts.
Each place people copy from leaves its own mark:
- ChatGPT and other chat apps. Rewritten bullets can arrive with their own bullet symbol in front, so your line shows two. In plain text, a chat app can also put stars round the words it wanted bold, and they land in your resume as literal stars.
- Google Docs and Word. The formatted copy brings the source document's font, size and spacing. A whole heading copied across can turn your bullet bold from end to end.
- A PDF. A PDF viewer often copies each printed line as its own line, so one sentence can arrive as three, broken where the old page ran out of room.
- Web pages, LinkedIn included. Copied text can carry characters you cannot see, such as non-breaking spaces and zero-width spaces, which upset spacing and line wrapping.
The worst damage is the kind you cannot see on screen. A line break left at the end of a bullet can print as an empty line in your PDF while staying hard to see, and hard to delete, on screen.
How to paste into your resume by hand
In Word or Google Docs, this routine keeps a pasted line looking like the rest of your resume:
- Paste the words only. Press Ctrl+Shift+V in Google Docs (Cmd+Shift+V on a Mac) for Paste without formatting. In Word, choose Keep Text Only from the Paste Options button; Microsoft's help page says it discards all formatting and the text takes on the style of the paragraph it lands in.
- Delete any bullet symbol that came with it. Your resume already draws its bullets. A pasted “•” or “-” in front of the text gives you two.
- Split a list into separate bullets. Put the cursor at the end of each item and press Enter, so every point is its own bullet rather than one bullet with breaks inside it.
- Join lines a PDF broke. Delete the break at the end of each line that stops mid-sentence, and check that no word was split by a hyphen.
- Re-add the bold and links you wanted. A plain paste drops all of them, including the ones that mattered, such as a link to your portfolio.
- Look for stray breaks. Turn on formatting marks (the ¶ button in Word) and delete any break sitting at the end of a line.
It takes a minute a paste, and it is easy to miss a step when you are rewriting a resume for the fifth job this week.
How the Rezifi resume editor handles a paste
Since 10 October 2026, a paste into the Rezifi resume editor brings the words, not the other app's baggage. Paste the way you always do, and the editor does the routine above for you:
- Your look, not theirs. Pasted words take the look of the line you paste into. The other app's fonts and sizes never come in.
- Your emphasis kept. Bold, italics and links on part of a line are kept. A style that covers the whole paste, such as a heading copied whole, is dropped.
- A list becomes bullets. Paste a list into a bullet and it becomes separate bullets. Paste one into “+ Add skill” and every skill is added in one step.
- PDF lines joined. Lines a PDF broke mid-sentence are joined back into one.
- The clutter taken out. Doubled bullet symbols, invisible characters and stray line breaks are removed, and a chat app's stars become real bold.
- One clean line where one line belongs. A section heading or the link box takes the paste as a single line.
When a paste changed shape, Rezifi marks the lines it wrote and says what it did, such as “3 bullets” or “Joined 2 lines”, with the other way one click away: Keep as one or Keep breaks. When nothing could go in, it says why. A clean paste shows nothing at all. Every paste is one undo step, and Ctrl+Shift+V (Cmd+Shift+V) still gives you the words only, in your line's look.
| Feature | Rezifi | A plain-text paste |
|---|---|---|
| Keeps the bold and links you chose | Yes | No |
| Removes bullet symbols the text brought | Yes | No |
| Turns a pasted list into separate bullets | Yes | No |
| Joins lines a PDF broke mid-sentence | Yes | No |
| Shows what changed, other way one click away | Yes | No |
All of this happens inside your own resume. Rezifi works on your resume from Word or Google Docs, no template needed, and keeps every bit of your layout: two columns, tables, text boxes, a photo, your fonts. No resume yet? Build one from Rezifi's ATS-friendly templates, from your notes, your LinkedIn profile or a PDF.
Pasting your resume into an application form
The other paste job seekers dread runs the opposite way: copying your resume into an application's text boxes. Those boxes take plain text, so columns collapse, bullets turn into odd symbols and headings lose their bold. If you have to do it, paste one section at a time as plain text, use capital letters for headings, and read the preview before you go on.
Better still, skip the copying. Rezifi's auto-apply copilot fills the whole application on any job site, even one it has never seen, page after page: it presses Next, adds your experience and education and attaches your resume. It answers from your resume and everything it learns about you, so every application is faster than the last. You press Submit.
Questions people ask
How do I paste into my resume without changing the font?
Paste as plain text so the words take the font of the line you paste into. In Google Docs that is Ctrl+Shift+V (Cmd+Shift+V on a Mac); in Word, choose Keep Text Only from the Paste Options button. In the Rezifi resume editor a normal paste already takes your line's look, and keeps bold and links on part of a line.
Why does pasted text from ChatGPT mess up my resume?
Text copied from a chat app can bring its own bullet symbols, so your line shows two, and stars round the words it wanted bold. A formatted paste can also bring a different font and spacing. Paste as plain text, then delete the extra bullets and stars. The Rezifi resume editor removes them for you and turns the stars into real bold.
How do I copy text from a PDF without the line breaks?
A PDF often copies each printed line as its own line, so delete the break at the end of every line that stops mid-sentence and check for words split by a hyphen. The Rezifi resume editor joins those lines when you paste, and offers Keep breaks if you wanted them as they were.
How do I paste a list into separate bullet points?
In Word or Google Docs, paste as plain text into a bulleted line, delete any bullet symbols that came with it, then press Enter at the end of each item. In the Rezifi resume editor, a list pasted into a bullet becomes separate bullets in one step, with Keep as one if you wanted a single line, and one undo takes it back.
Why is there a blank line in my resume PDF that I cannot delete?
Usually a line break left at the end of a bullet, often by a paste. It can be hard to see on screen while the PDF prints it as an empty line. In Word, turn on formatting marks with the ¶ button and delete the break. The Rezifi resume editor takes stray breaks out of every paste.
Do I have to copy and paste my resume into job applications?
Not with an autofill tool. Rezifi's auto-apply copilot, a Chrome extension, fills the whole application on any job site from your resume, page after page, and attaches your resume. You review it and press Submit.
Paste without the clean-up: bring your resume from Word or Google Docs into Rezifi and edit it in its own design, see your score with the free ATS checker, tailor it to every job and apply from the same place.
