To fit your resume on one page, cut what this job does not need first, then tighten the spacing around headings, between entries and between lines. Leave the font size and the margins alone: they are what make a page easy to read, and a smaller font is a change the reader feels on every line.
When a resume runs over by two or three lines, the reflex is to knock the font down half a point. Here is why that is the wrong fix, the order to cut in, and how Rezifi's resume editor pulls the page back in one click, without touching your text size.

Should your resume be one page?
Usually, yes. The USC Career Center treats one page as standard practice in the U.S., and accepts two pages once you have ten or more years of work experience.
So the usual problem is not a resume that needs two full pages. It is one where page two holds three lines and a lot of white paper, and space is the first place to win it back.
Why a smaller font is the wrong fix
Shrinking the type is the fastest way onto one page and the worst one for the reader. The same USC guidance recommends 11 to 12 point type and one-inch margins, and half a point off every line makes the whole page harder to read, to save three lines.
Word has a command for exactly this, Shrink One Page. Microsoft's own help page says it makes the text smaller and its spacing tighter, that its button is hidden until you add it to the toolbar, and that after you save and close there is no quick way to get the original font size back.
| Feature | Rezifi | Word's Shrink One Page |
|---|---|---|
| Keeps your font size | Yes | No |
| Undo any time, even after you save and close | Yes | No |
| On screen without any setup | Yes | No |
How to fit your resume on one page, step by step
Work through these in order: the first three cut words, the last three cut space, and the font and margins come after all six, if at all.
- Cut what this job does not need. Roles from long ago, coursework once you have work experience, a hobbies line that says nothing about the job, and a “references available on request” line, which costs a line and tells the reader nothing new.
- Fix the lines that wrap by a word. A bullet with one or two words alone on its last line costs a whole line. Trim a few words.
- Merge thin sections. Skills read well as one or two lines separated by commas, and a few certifications can sit under your education.
- Close the gaps around headings and between entries. The space before and after each heading and between jobs is usually the biggest gain on the page, and the change a reader is least likely to notice.
- Bring line spacing back to single. It wins back room on every line and still reads easily.
- Delete the empty lines you typed for spacing. Each one is a full line of height, the ones after your last word included.
| What to change | When, and why |
|---|---|
| Space before and after headings | First. Usually the biggest gain, and the least noticed |
| Space between jobs and entries | Next. Each entry stays together with less air around it |
| Line spacing above single | Next. Single spacing is still easy to read |
| Empty lines typed for spacing | Next. Each one is a full line of height |
| Font size | Last. A smaller font is harder to read on every line |
| Margins | Last. Narrow margins make the whole page look crammed |
Still over after all six? One more bullet has to go. That is a better trade than a smaller font.
How Rezifi fits your resume to one page
Rezifi's editor works on your own resume: bring it from Word or Google Docs, no template needed, and it keeps your layout. When it runs a few lines onto the next page, the preview bar offers Fit to 1 page, right beside the page counter. One click, and the page comes back.
- It tightens the spacing, and only the spacing. Every gap closes by the same amount, so your resume keeps its rhythm, using the smallest squeeze that fits: never more than half a gap, never tighter than single spacing.
- It checks its own work. A fit that would change how many lines your resume prints is refused, so nothing re-wraps. Text boxes, headers and footers keep their look, and a photo or icon beside your text stays beside it.
- It never edits your file. The fit is applied to what comes out: the preview, the PDF, the Word download and the Google Docs export. Undo fit puts your own spacing back at any time.
- It tells you when you outgrow it. Add lines later and the bar says Too long for 1 page: time to cut, not squeeze.
A longer resume that spills onto a third page gets Fit to 2 pages. The button shows only when the fit works, and a tailored copy of your resume keeps the fit.
What it never touches
- Your font size.
- Your margins.
- Your paper size.
- Your words. The fit moves space, not text.
Why your resume has a blank last page
A blank last page usually holds nothing but an empty paragraph. Word ends every document with a paragraph that cannot be deleted, and when your last line sits at the foot of page one, that paragraph can land on a page of its own. Microsoft's own fix is to make that paragraph tiny: 1 point.
Rezifi does that for you. When a resume you upload ends on an empty page, the empty lines after your last word fold to a hidden 1-point line and the page comes off, without a click. So does a blank page a page break leaves in the middle.
When one page is the wrong goal
With ten or more years of work, two full pages are fine, and cutting real results to hit one page costs more than it saves. Fit to the pages your experience earns, and spend the effort on what each job asks for.
That is Rezifi's tailor: it rewrites your bullets, summary and skills in each job's own keywords, on a copy, and your original is untouched.
Questions people ask
How do I fit my resume on one page?
Cut what the job does not need first: old roles, coursework, hobbies and the references line. Then fix bullets that wrap by a word, close the space around headings and between entries, set line spacing to single and delete typed empty lines. Change the font size and margins last, if at all.
Is it OK to make the font smaller to fit my resume on one page?
Only as a last resort. A smaller font makes every line harder to read, and the USC Career Center recommends 11 to 12 point type. Tightening the spacing between headings, entries and lines wins back room without touching the type.
Why does my resume have a blank second page?
Usually an empty paragraph. Word ends every document with a paragraph that cannot be deleted, and when your last line sits at the foot of page one it can land on a page of its own. Setting that paragraph to 1 point removes the page, and Rezifi does it automatically for a resume you upload.
Should a resume be one page or two?
The USC Career Center treats one page as standard practice in the U.S. and two pages as acceptable once you have ten or more years of work experience. Students and recent graduates write one page.
Does Rezifi change my resume when it fits it to one page?
No. Rezifi's Fit to 1 page tightens only the spacing of what comes out (the preview, the PDF, the Word download and the Google Docs export), never your font size, margins or words. Your own file is not changed, and Undo fit puts your spacing back.
Is Rezifi's Fit to 1 page free?
Yes. Rezifi is free to get started, no card needed, and the editor, Fit to 1 page and your downloads are part of the free plan. One simple plan adds unlimited tailoring and applying.
