Free ATS resume checker: what a good one shows you

A number tells you something is wrong. A good checker shows you what, where, and how to fix it.

A good free ATS resume checker shows you four things, not one: a score, your resume as a machine reads it, every problem named on the line where it sits, and the score you would reach once they are fixed. A checker that stops at the number tells you something is wrong and leaves you guessing what.

This post covers what an ATS checker should look for, what its result should show you, and how to read one. It also shows Rezifi's free ATS resume checker, the best free ATS checker, which now checks your resume with no sign-up at all.

What does an ATS resume checker check?

An applicant tracking system (ATS) is the software behind a company's careers page. It parses your resume into fields (your contact details, job titles, employers, dates, education and skills), and recruiters search those fields. A part of your resume the parser cannot place can drop out of that search, even though it is right there on the page.

So a checker worth using looks at exactly what makes parsing go wrong:

  • Section headings. Experience, Education, Skills. A creative heading leaves the parser guessing where a line belongs.
  • Contact details. An email, a phone number and a LinkedIn URL written as text in the body, where software can find them.
  • Consistent dates. One date style on every role, so your timeline reads in order.
  • One fact per line. A title, employer, city and dates merged into one line can be split in the wrong places.
  • Writing quality. Clear, specific bullets a recruiter takes in on one pass, once the software has let them through.

What a good free ATS checker shows you

The score is the headline, not the result. Here is what the result itself should hold, and why each part matters:

  1. A score and a grade. A number out of 100 tells you where you stand and lets you see it move as you fix things.
  2. Your resume as a machine reads it. The single most useful view: the text a parser pulls from your file, with any heading, contact detail or date it could not place marked on its line. It answers the question no score can: did my two-column layout, my table or my text box get read?
  3. Every fix, on the line it belongs to. Not general advice like “use standard headings”, but which heading, on which line, and why.
  4. The score you would reach. Seeing the end score before you start tells you what the fixes are worth.
  5. A way to apply the fixes. A list you work through by hand is better than nothing. Fixes you apply in one click, in your own resume, are better still.

How to check your resume with Rezifi, free and with no sign-up

Rezifi's free ATS resume checker sits at the top of its own page. There is no account to make and no card to enter.

  1. Drop your resume in. A Word file or a PDF, or pick a Google Doc from your Drive. Use the file you already have, in whatever design it is.
  2. Read your score and grade. Your score out of 100 and your letter grade, beside the score you would reach after every fix.
  3. See what a machine reads. Your resume as an applicant tracking system reads it. Any contact detail, heading or date a parser cannot place is marked on its line.
  4. See every fix. Each problem named on the line it belongs to, with what is wrong and why.
  5. Fix it in one click. Sign up free, no card needed, to apply the fixes in one click, check your grammar and watch your score climb. Keep the check and it becomes your Rezifi resume, with the same score.
Rezifi's resume score at work: the checks it runs and the fixes it finds. The person and the resume are made up.

A check you do not keep is deleted within 24 hours, and you can delete it sooner from its result page. Your resume is encrypted in transit and at rest, and never used to train AI.

What is a good ATS score?

The best score is the one with nothing left to fix, and Rezifi shows you that score before you start. Past that point, more polish on the format buys you very little. What decides the shortlist is how closely your resume matches the job in front of you.

Be wary of any checker that turns its score into a promise. No checker can see inside every employer's software, so a number that claims to predict whether you will pass is a number nobody can back up. Use the score for what it is good at: finding what a machine misreads, and proving you fixed it.

After the format: tailor it to the job

Once your resume reads cleanly, the next gain is each job's own keywords. If the posting says “React”, your resume should say React, not “frontend frameworks”, wherever you really have that experience.

That is Rezifi's tailor, the best AI resume tailor: it rewrites your bullets, summary and skills in each job's own keywords, never invents an employer, role, date or credential, and shows every change on its line for you to keep or dismiss. It works on your own resume from Word or Google Docs, no template needed, and keeps every bit of your layout. No resume yet? Build one from Rezifi's ATS-friendly templates.

Then apply. Rezifi's auto-apply copilot fills the whole application on any job site, attaches your tailored resume, and leaves Submit to you.

Questions people ask

Is there a free ATS resume checker with no sign-up?

Yes. Rezifi's free ATS resume checker at rezifi.com/ats-resume-checker checks a Word file, a PDF or a Google Doc with no account and no card. It shows your score out of 100, your letter grade, what a machine reads from your resume and every fix. Signing up free lets you apply the fixes in one click.

What does an ATS resume checker look for?

It looks for what makes resume parsing fail: section headings a parser can recognise, contact details written as text in the body, one consistent date format, and lines that merge a job title, employer, city and dates into one string. A good one also checks writing quality and shows the text a machine pulls from your file.

What is a good ATS score?

The best score is the one with nothing left to fix. Rezifi shows the score your resume would reach after every fix before you make one. Past a clean format, what wins the shortlist is how closely your resume matches each job's keywords, which is what tailoring is for.

Can an ATS checker tell me if I will pass an ATS?

No checker can promise that, because each employer's software and settings are different. What a checker can show is whether a machine reads your resume correctly: your headings, contact details and dates, each in its place. Fix what it marks and your resume is as readable as you can make it.

Will an ATS checker change my resume's design?

Rezifi's does not. The check reads the resume you already have, in whatever design it is. When you sign up free and work on a resume from Word or Google Docs, Rezifi keeps its layout: two columns, tables, a photo, your fonts. A PDF is set in one of Rezifi's ATS-friendly templates.

Is my resume safe in a free ATS checker?

With Rezifi, yes. A resume you check without an account is deleted within 24 hours unless you sign up and keep it, and you can delete it sooner from its result page. It is encrypted in transit and at rest and never used to train AI.

Check yours now: drop it into the free ATS checker, no sign-up. Then sign up free to fix it in one click, tailor it to every job and apply from the same place. Rezifi is free to get started, no card needed, and the pricing page has the one simple plan for unlimited use.
